  Hello ... Watching the example in the video, I believe you would just need shorter arms ( and consequently a little thinner spring due to shorter scissor movement ) to not take too much drawer space ( in case it's the problem you pointed ) . What exactly you mean by elegant ( as the actual design is already simple ) ?

     The pair of tongs needs a certain length for it to be useful. If its arms spread apart when at rest, this is not desirable as most kitchen drawers are crammed. A locking mechanism that is elegant means a clever, neat and simple way to accomplish this purpose.
