1. Choose a company to evaluate over the course of the semester. The company must be publicly traded on a US stock exchange and must have been public for at least one year.
2. First Post (Due January 31): Describe the major businesses that your company engages in, the kinds of risks that it faces, and any major issues of the past year. Include the company name and ticker symbol. This will give you experience in evaluating a company's risks, based on its annual reports and press releases.
3. Subsequent Posts: As the semester progresses, continue to follow the company. Periodically relate concepts we are discussing in class to specific events happening at (or to) the company. The subsequent posts should not be a regurgitation of what you have described in the initial risk assessment, but instead should provide specific examples of the application of concepts we are discussing in class. Potential topics for subsequent posts (at your discretion) are:
Mergers/Acquisitions and their impact on risk
Attraction and Retention of Employees
I already choose to write about Alphabet Inc. Here is the feedback:
Wow! This is a great company to be following! I had not realized that Google was transforming itself to do even bigger and better things. One of the exciting things about this project from my perspective is that I am always learning.
Your post caused me to go to the Alphabet website. I am particularly interested in the creation of the name Alphabet. They describe it in two ways -- alphabet is a collection of letters that together create a system of language and 2) Alpha-Bet describes that the company is all about investments and earning a reasonable return on those investments.
You are writing about this company at a unique point in its history. With a change in leadership at Google, there is always risk that the transition may not go as smoothly as initially envisioned or that the successor will not have the same level of energy, excitement and vision as the initial founders did. I had no idea of the reach of the company -- even the original, much less the new company.
You are absolutely correct that advertising is a key for Google profitability. But as the new company Alphabet is forming, will they have the same business model? How will this new company create value (and make money) in some of its newer ventures? Will they also generate off advertising sales?
For instance, will the Google car be a profit center in its own right, with profitability measured in sales of cars? Is Google car being managed within the construct of the google subsidiary, or will that be one of the new ventures that Alphabet is invested in. Similarly, I had no idea that they were involved in projects on longevity and life sciences. Might Alphabet be the new realm for insurance?
There is so much that you could have said about this new company and its possibilities! I hope that you will extend your thoughts on the company and its vision for the future in further posts.
