I have an epic fantasy story that is currently ~200k words and will be at least double that, if not triple, when finished. The main problem I have so far is that there are so many threads and so many characters to introduce, I worry the beginning of the story will feel labored and slow. I’m still introducing key characters hundred of pages into the story.
What I propose for this project:
• I will provide materials for you to analyze (multiple documents totaling 10-15 pages in MS Word)
o a three-page synopsis of the story
o a one-page overview of the current structure
o a list of the main characters and a paragraph about each
o a list of chapters, with who the POV character is, and a couple sentences about what the objective(s) and emotional beats are for the chapter (sort of a “beat sheet” in screenplay parlance)
o NOT fully-dramatized manuscript scenes because that is too detailed for the analysis I’m looking for
• you help me to understand
o Yes or no, is the current linear start too slow? If yes, would you
• cut chapters or whole storylines (I have already cut a lot, so justification must be rock-solid)
• move some chapters to be covered later as flashbacks or something once the story has more momentum.
• Some other proposed narrative structure / sequence or arrangement of chapters
o For whatever your analysis is, your justification and specifics
No it’s not too slow – here’s why
Yes it’s too slow – here’s why and what I would do
o If you find an obvious structure issue OTHER than the tempo of the opening and your recommendations
To be crystal clear, I am only looking for feedback on organization, structure, and the sequence of arrangement, not any comment on the content (it is dark and violent). As a deliverable, I am looking for at least a few pages on your method and thought process, what you think the issue(s) are and your recommendations.
How long would it take you to provide the analysis and write recommendations? What would you charge? Do you have any comments / reviews in your profile specifically for developmental / structural editing? Thanks for reading!
