The popup books will be based on Aesops fables which is a collection of tales which have some moral message behind it.
Tales include The Tortoise and the Hare, The Lion and the Mouse, The Crocodile and the Monkey and so forth.
For example in the story of the Tortoise and the Hare, the message is, slow and steady wins the race.
I want to revamp Aesops fables and turn it into a collection of short popup books for young children ideal for bedtime reading. I have some idea of the type of illustration I am looking for. Each book will only be 4-5 pages long but there will be enough there to make the story last about 5minutes. Ideally the book will be a large version like an A4 or even an A3 size which popups out when opened.
I want to hire an illustrator who is good at drawing detailed and funny cartoon scenes, but for a pop-up book design so ideally I need someone will also has some experience with a pop-up book. The plan would be to work on a single book to begin with and get it to a finished state and then to expand to more "tales" if the first book is successful.
The book would ideally be made to withstand some wear and tear without falling apart. It may mean constructing it from a material different to paper, like maybe plastic but this is a decision that can be made later.
The search right now is for a illustrator to work on the first book and maybe on further books.
I would like any interested individual to do 2 things:
1) Draw a scene out of The Tortoise and the Hare story in full color. Ideally the scene should be busy, interesting and for a more modern audience. For example the scene could be set in a city environment rather than the countryside. It should be cartoony, I would like the characters to wear clothes if possible.
There are certain illustrations of animals which look more classical (that is not what I am after)
2) Show how that scene could be converted into a pop-up book. This could be done through showing a 3D drawing of how it could look OR actually making it using cardboard and uploading pictures of it.
I am happy to pay hourly but I figured it might be easier to negotiate a price for the finished illustrations and have milestones.
I am also more than happy to have 2 people, an illustrator and a paper engineer to work together to produce a finished product. I have been meaning to turn Aesops fables into a pop-up book series for a while so at the very least, I want to produce 1 finished pop-up and then go from there.
I am not expecting a finished product to be posted to me right now but there needs to be enough there for me to accurately evaluate the individual and to be honest, it would be great if you submit something that wows me.
Please let me know if you need any further information.
UPDATE: Dear illustrators, I wanted to confirm that I will not consider anyone who does not attempt to follow the brief. i.e. I want to see some illustration for the scene I have specified, i.e. The Tortoise and the Hare. If you don`t want to do this, that is completely ok.
