We have a web-based customer management tool. Our customers would like to be able to integrate this tool with Microsoft Word mail merge functionality. Essentially, there are 2 levels of functionality that we would like (see attached file). The first is completely server-side. It allows users to upload Word templates to the server (Linux-based). The user would then be able to email/print Word or PDF attachments directly and the server would handle the merge. We were considering having the user convert the Word templates to either rtf or html files before uploading them to the server. We're not sure how easily a Linux server can alter/process MS Word docs, but we're sure it can parse rtf or html files. Our solution already sends emails and sends attachments. The actual server-side merge piece is all that needs doing. The second part of the job is a client-side (MS Word-based) mail merge. The web application talks to MS Word via a plug in. In this case, the user may be doing a direct mailing, printing and sending the mail merged documents to hundreds of people. The mail merge processing for this case would be done in Word itself. The web application would simply provide the necessary database fields to Word (see attached design file) We have a web programmer who can help with the web development on the server, but the project leadership, plugin design, and testing would be handled by you. Please describe your experience building MS Word plugins or similar if you bid for this job.
