Please explain the rights to use GNU free software platforms

I would like a lucid explanation of the rights, pros and cons of using such GNU platforms as Linus, Apache and Perl to develop a web enabled database that

1) I will use in my own business

2) May eventually choose to sell/license to other members in my industry

The proprietary alternatives seem steeply priced but I question how I can protect my database system should I ever decide to sell it as a product if it is but by freeware.
