Hello! We’re looking for some changes and streamlining to our listing process, to help improve visibility and usability on the site. Some basic cosmetic changes would be having the list pages (Current Listings, Fixed Price Listings, Archived Listings) reformatted to what is standard on bookseller’s websites; a thumbnail image with a paragraph of text, which can be ordered by date, author etc. (I’ll cover relevant data points below). We’ll also want the side gallery for each listing to automatically hide for mobile users, as it clutters up small screens.
So I’ll go over our process, so you can design around our use-case. As it stands, I mainly use two HTML templates, one for eBay and a smaller one for our website
Each listing is pretty much laid out the same way;
-a short bit of bold opening text describing the importance of the item
-the data points: date (if known), edition (if known), Short Title (this will always be present, and we will use this for the url), author (if known), editor (if known), publisher (if known), printer (if known), place of publication (if known), engraver (if known), artist (if known), contributor and their contribution(if known), previous owner (if known, referred to a provenance) .
-followed by Condition and Completeness section. Each of these two sections has a short bold text (eg. “In Very Good Condition” & “Complete in All Respects”) followed by a short paragraph of description for each
-After the completeness section I put an image spread, typically the Arcspin iframe and an image of the full title
After this is the detail text of the listing, giving some historical and biographical context for the item. This is followed by the pagination, register and measurements.
To make this process easier I would also like some changes to the back end. Since my data entry is effectively the same each listing, having separate entry fields for each data point and section would be ideal: currently we have the century (which I want to change to specific date) and author, so the other points mentioned above should have the same sort of entry fields, and it should output something like:
The <date>, <edition> of <short title> By <author>, Printed in <place of publication> by <printer> for <publisher>, with Plates by <engraver> after <artist>, Edited by <editor>, with <section> by <contributor>, Ex-Libris <previous owner>.
As you might guess, if certain information isn’t available, the grammar of the output changes as well (i.e. if we don’t know the author, we shouldn't see ‘By’ after the short title, if there is no date or edition, it should start with the short title.) the other important part of the basic data entry is to give me control of which header type each point has (<h1>, <h2> etc.) so that I can emphasise particular points for the site indexing. Finally, I would like some changes to the back end of the gallery. Right now, the images are shown in a grid, and I have to go into each image, check off whether it is the thumbnail / in the side gallery and save. For every image separately. I’d rather those check boxes be beside each images thumbnail, so i can check all the images I want at the same time, then save.
Apart from this, I would love if we could generate a separate HTML output that I could drag and drop into the Ebay listing, as this would save me a tonne of time.
