A brief history of industrial revolutions
In the mid-18th to early 19th century we saw the beginning of what we today know as the First Industrial revolution. Characteristics of this early industrialisation were technological progress, a shift from rural work to industrial labor and financial investments in new industrial structure.
The "Second Industrial Revolution" labels the later changes that came about in the mid-19th century after the refinement of the steam engine, the invention of the internal combustion engine, the harnessing of electricity and the construction of canals, railways and electric-power lines. The invention of the assembly line gave this phase a boost. Coal mines, steelworks, and textile factories replaced homes as the place of work.
Nearly a century later, in the second half of the 20th century, a third industrial revolution appeared. This revolution witnessed the rise of electronics—with the transistor and microprocessor—but also the rise of telecommunications and computers, automation in production and robots.
Here we are…the fourth revolution is unfolding before our eyes. Its genesis is situated at the dawn of the third millennium with the emergence of the Internet. However, this time we are facing a major threat - climate change. Global carbon emissions have jumped to an all-time high and whilst our demand for energy is soaring.
Climate change adaptation is the greatest entrepreneurial challenge of our time.
Energy, technology, sustainability and climate are key ingredients in this revolution.
Industries and businesses must solve the transition to renewable energy. New technology and innovations will emerge and play a key role in the battle against carbon emissions and resource efficiency. More and more companies will integrate sustainability into their business strategy - realizing they can do well by doing good.
in the future, and regardless of the industry, one will be influenced by increasing demands for energy security and environmental considerations.
The fourth industrial revolution is about making business greener - making business greener by adapting best energy and environmental technology and industrial practice to remain sustainable and profitable.
